What are options?
An Option is a contract between two parties giving the buyer the
right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a parcel of shares at
a set price, on or before a predetermined date.
Options can be bought or sold on the underlying shares or the
Index. You will generally find Exchange traded options for the ASX
top 100 stocks as well as the ASX 200 index. There are two
types of options traded on the ASX exchange traded option platform.
Call options and Put options.
Call Options give the Buyer the right but not the obligation to
buy the underlying shares, and Put Options give the buyer the right
to sell the underlying shares. At the commencement of the
transaction the buyer of the option pays the seller a premium,
which is the cost of the option.
It should be noted that the buyer of the option is not obligated
to exercise the option. The buyer can sell the option before it
expires, or alternatively let the contract lapse at expiry, but
will forgo the option premium.
Options expire each month on the last Thursday of the month with
a Friday following.
